ACTVet

Swansea University | GREAT Network | Office for Veterans' Affairs | Milgam

The ACTVet project is a large-scale initiative designed to support veterans facing gambling-related harm and PTSD through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). While research on gambling in military populations is limited, studies indicate that veterans encounter unique mental health challenges. Since 2015, the US Department of Veterans Affairs has employed ACT as a trans-diagnostic approach that fosters psychological flexibility, enabling veterans to manage cravings and regain control over their responses to triggers.

For this project, I was responsible for creating a comprehensive brand identity, which included designing a full logo suite and selecting an accessible colour palette to ensure inclusivity. I developed a cohesive visual language that reflects the initiative's therapeutic nature and appeals to the veteran community. Additionally, I produced over 100 custom illustrations to enhance the educational content related to ACT, making complex concepts more relatable. I also designed the entire app, focusing on both low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes to create a clean and intuitive user interface for veterans.

User-centred design was crucial, as it ensures that the unique needs of veterans were prioritised throughout the process. By actively seeking feedback from potential users, I integrated their insights into the design at every stage. This approach enhances usability and fosters a sense of ownership and trust, as users see their needs reflected in the final product. Ultimately, user-centred design helps create accessible, effective tools that empower veterans on their journey toward recovery.
