Suicide Prevention Strategy

Lincolnshire County Council

Overview

This project involved designing the county’s Suicide Prevention Strategy 2024–2028, a multi-agency document jointly developed by local authorities, health bodies, community partners, and people with lived experience.

The aim was to create a strategy that could communicate a sensitive subject with clarity and compassion, balancing data with humanity and turning complex insight into something accessible, supportive, and action-focused.

The Challenge

The document needed to serve many audiences: health professionals, policymakers, charities, and members of the public. It had to present extensive data and policy commitments while remaining approachable and sensitive to those personally affected by suicide.

The key challenge was finding a visual and written tone that felt professional and data-driven, yet gentle and hopeful. The design needed to guide readers confidently through the information without overwhelming them.

The new designs needed to:

  • Communicate complex data and strategy clearly and accessibly

  • Balance authority with empathy and hope

  • Reflect the voices of lived experience respectfully

  • Encourage collaboration between multiple agencies and partners

  • Provide clear guidance for local action and community support

Strategy and Creative Direction

I created a layout system that made the content easy to navigate and emotionally considerate:

  • Accessible structure: clear sectioning of vision, risk factors, guiding principles, commitments, and action plan so readers could easily find what was relevant to them.

  • Visual tools: infographics, charts, and maps to communicate complex statistics clearly, helping the reader engage with information without distress.

  • Tone and colour: a calm, neutral palette and open typography to support readability and promote a sense of stability and hope.

  • Human focus: inclusion of lived experience quotes, calls to action, and support resources throughout, ensuring the document was not only informative but also supportive and inclusive.

The design approach prioritised empathy and accessibility, helping transform a technical strategy into a tool that connects and informs.
